Anti Corruption Collective Action Competitions 2009

Competition for Students and Young Professionals


Have your creative ideas on fighting corruption through collective action heard by top executives from around the world at the World Bank Head Quarters in Washington DC.

The World Bank Institute and its partners invite students and young professionals to participate in a competition on private sector anti-corruption efforts.

This competition is linked to the Executive Development Program: "Fighting Corruption through Collective Action in Today’s Competitive Marketplaces" which will be held in Washington DC at the World Bank Head Quarters from June 8 to June 11, 2009.


Guidelines

Eligibility Criteria:

Students and young professionals between 18 and 35 years of age are eligible to participate.

Topic Categories:

You may choose from one of the two following options to participate in the competition:

Option 1: Essay on what are the challenges and associated solutions for companies working together in Collective Action to fight corruption.

Your essay should be 8-10 pages (3000-5000 words) and an abstract of 250-300 words should also be provided.

To enter the competition please send your work in a MS-Word document via e-mail to acedp@worldbank.org.

Option 2: Business plan on a design an innovative monitoring model to prevent corruption and ensure compliance in a specific part of the private sector. In addition, please provide a description of challenges that could arise for the different stakeholders.

Your business plan should be 8-10 pages (3000-5000 words) and an abstract of 250-300 words should also be provided.

Background on the Competition Topic:

Collective action is the constructive role that business can play in fighting corruption jointly with other companies and stakeholders. Organizations and individuals are already successfully using collective action today, working with business associations, civil society, media, government departments and other stakeholders. The results are increased competition, improved transparency and less corruption across multiple countries and sectors. Society has benefited, as have the business which have been provided more reasonably priced and higher quality goods and services – with the costly and inefficient effects of corruption reduced or eliminated. 1st prize:
  • Invitation for one person to the Word Bank Head Quarters in Washington DC. The invitation covers the participation, travel and stay expenses to the Anti-Corruption Executive Development program.

  • Presentation of your submission during the program and publication of your submitted work on the World Bank Institute portal.

  • Advice from World Bank and private sector experts on how to strengthen your professional skills.

2nd prize:
  • Invitation for one person to the Word Bank Head Quarters in Washington DC. The invitation covers the participation's fee to the Anti-Corruption Executive Development program.
  • Publication of your submitted work on the World Bank Institute portal.

3rd prize:

  • Publication of your submitted work on the World Bank Institute portal.

Evaluation:

A jury comprising of World Bank staff and partners of the World Bank selects the winner. Winners will be announced on May 15, 2009. The decision of the jury is final and is not subject to an appeal.

Essay Evaluation Criteria:

The evaluation criteria consists of originality of contribution, quality and clarity of prose, persuasiveness, precision and concision, style, insight, and contribution to the private sector’s role in fighting corruption through collective action.

Business Plan Evaluation Criteria:

The criteria for the business plan evaluation are innovation, results and impacts, replicability, envisaged outcome, originality of contribution, quality and clarity, persuasiveness, precision, concision, style, insight, and contribution to the private sector’s role in fighting corruption through collective action. The business plan must present non-conventional approaches to the topic and have the potential to be used in several business sectors.
